L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, has launched its first exhibition in Singapore, titled ‘Ruby, Discover the Gemstones’.
Running from 29th July to 20th October 2024 at Les Jardins Secrets by Van Cleef & Arpels in Raffles Hotel Singapore, the exhibition is part of the institution’s ‘Discover the Gemstones’ series. It examines the journey of rubies, from their geological formation to their transformation into finished jewellery, providing jewellers and gemologists with insights into this well-known gemstone.
Focus on Rubies: A Gemological Journey
The exhibition provides an in-depth look into the natural state of rubies and the processes that turn these raw minerals into jewellery. With more than 20 exhibits, it highlights the stages of a ruby’s journey, showcasing the collaboration between natural formations and the craftsmanship of lapidarists.
According to Lise Macdonald, President of L’ÉCOLE, the event represents a significant milestone for the school: “The Ruby exhibition traces the path of this exceptional gem from rough mineral to jewel.” This detailed overview is aimed at gemologists and jewellers who want to expand their understanding of the factors that contribute to a ruby’s value.
Collaboration with Industry Experts
The exhibition benefits from key collaborations, featuring archival documents, high jewellery creations from Van Cleef & Arpels, and specimens from private collectors. Contributors such as Lotus Gemology and Pala International have provided mineral specimens for analysis.
One notable feature is the work of Billie Hughes, a photomicrograph and gemologist from Lotus Gemology. Her images of ruby inclusions reveal key details about their origins and formation, providing jewellers and gemologists with information that can impact a ruby’s quality and market value.
Significance for the Jewellery Industry
For professional jewellers, the exhibition offers more than just a look at the beauty of rubies. Understanding the formation, inclusions, and quality of rubies is essential for assessing their use in jewellery, and exhibitions like this contribute to industry knowledge.
L’ÉCOLE’s mission to spread jewellery culture, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, is evident in this exhibition. As Lise Macdonald highlights, “The School of Jewelry Arts is thrilled to have opened its very first exhibition in Singapore.” Events like this encourage ongoing learning within the industry, offering jewellers insights into recent research, techniques, and trends related to gemstones.
